The Saints and Sinners Literary Festival
The Saints and Sinners Literary Festival is May 8 - 11, 2008, in New Orleans.
"The “Saints and Sinners” LGBT literary festival presents panel discussions and master classes around literary topics to provide a forum for authors and editors to talk about their work for the benefit of emerging writers and the enjoyment of fans of LGBT literature."
This year will be my third Saints and Sinners. Everyone has conferences that they never miss. Saints and Sinners is mine. As an author of GLBT erotica, I consider Saints and Sinners a required event for me.
This year I'm going to enjoy a full schedule.
I arrive in New Orleans on Thursday, May 8 and will attend the special evening event Read Me Something Mister. At this event, "writers read from their favorite New Orleans authors."
On Friday, I'm very much looking forward to the master classes that I will attend. There are at least eight excellent master classes that are provided this year. I registered for two. One is taught by one of my favorite authors - Michelle Tea. The other is taught by another one of my favorite authors - Dorothy Allison. (Dorothy had to cancel last year, so I'm thrilled that she will be returning this year.)
Friday night I'm attending the premiere production of the winning full-length play from the annual Saints and Sinners Playwriting Competition.
On Saturday and Sunday, a large variety of panels/classes are offered. The full schedule is still in progress, but the website offers a preview. In addition, Saints and Sinners has a reading series. Last year I read an excerpt to an audience from my story in Iridescence. This year I plan to read an excerpt from the story that I will be including in the anthology that Sapphic Planet is producing. Reading to an audience is nerve wracking for some, but it is one of the best ways to promote your work. The reading series at Saints and Sinners is always well attended.

I don't care how popular a conference is or how much hoopla it gets. I don't attend conferences because everyone else is doing it, and I won't spend my money to attend a conference unless it's going to benefit me. RT would be a complete waste of a lot of money because I have little to no interest in what they focus on. I didn't attend EPICon this year because I have no e-books out and therefore I have nothing to promote. In addition, my e-book writing is on hold as I focus on writing my first novel.
What I am is a writer of GLBT erotica and Saints and Sinners gives me the opportunity to meet and network with people who do what I do. Some of the people are erotica writers. Many of them are not. But all of them are involved in GLBT literature - which apart from my non-fiction freelance work, is my writing life.
